HANYS and NYONE Release Workforce Strategies Guidebook

ALBANY, NY — In recognition of National Hospital Week (May 7-13), the Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS) and the New York Organization of Nurse Executives (NYONE) have published a Workforce Strategies Guidebook.  The Guidebook highlights a sampling of members’ efforts in the areas of recruitment, retention, staff engagement, and organizational culture change.

New York State hospitals provide emergency care, inpatient care, surgery, and outpatient services to all New Yorkers, regardless of their ability to pay, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  Offering the best possible health care in a safe, compassionate environment is a commitment every hospital makes to its community.

However, hospitals in New York State struggle each day with continued financial losses, difficulty accessing capital, and workforce shortages.  Despite these challenges, hospitals continue to identify new and unique ways to recruit and retain staff.  In addition, many members are instituting complete facility- or system-wide culture changes to better engage employees and to make their organizations more desirable places to work.

This year, the theme of National Hospital Week is “Where Miracles Happen Every Day!”  This theme does not just refer to hospitals, but also to the wonderful things hospital employees do every day.  Hospital staff make miracles happen, which is why this Guidebook emphasizes what New York State hospitals are doing to focus on their greatest asset—their staff.

A list of hospitals featured in the Guidebook is attached.

HANYS, the only statewide health care association in New York State, represents more than 550 non-profit and public hospitals, nursing homes, home care agencies, and other health care organizations.  NYONE is the professional organization for nurses who design, facilitate, influence, and manage health care services in New York State.
