HANYS awarded Mother Cabrini Health Foundation grant for Increasing the Nursing Home CNA Workforce Pipeline

The new funding will enable HANYS to support member nursing homes in recruiting, onboarding, certifying and training new certified nursing assistants.

RENSSELAER, NY — With support from the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation, the Healthcare Association of New York State, through its subsidiary, the Health Educational and Research Fund, Inc., will provide six HANYS member nursing homes need-based funding to build their workforce pipeline through the recruitment, onboarding, certification and training of new certified nursing assistants.

In early 2024, HANYS will:

  • host an informational webinar outlining this new funding opportunity;
  • offer an open, competitive process to HANYS member nursing homes to apply for the grant funding; and
  • select six awardees who will each receive:
    • $1,000 to support recruitment efforts (posting open positions on job boards, social media, print, etc.); and
    • up to $25,000 to support the successful onboarding, certification and training of five new CNAs.

Nursing homes continue to face unrelenting fiscal and workforce challenges exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. By providing need-based funding to nonprofit nursing homes to offset costs associated with recruiting, onboarding, certification and training CNAs, this grant will increase the number of healthcare paraprofessionals providing care to some of our state’s most vulnerable residents.
HANYS and our members are intensely focused on addressing healthcare workforce shortages. The Mother Cabrini Health Foundation’s generous funding will allow us to support our nursing home members and their residents,” said Bea Grause, RN, JD, president, HANYS. “We are proud to have this opportunity to help our members grow their CNA workforce. We thank the Foundation for its continued partnership in improving healthcare for all New Yorkers.”

“Mother Cabrini Health Foundation is committed to improving the health of vulnerable New Yorkers by supporting the development of a skilled and diverse healthcare workforce. We’re pleased to support this project to ensure a pipeline of talented healthcare workers is available,” said Msgr. Gregory Mustaciuolo, chief executive officer, Mother Cabrini Health Foundation.
