Practical Strategies for Implementing Antibiotic Stewardship

April 30, 2015
Webconference

This event is open to HANYS' Members Only.

10 - 11 a.m.

Hosted by HANYS’ Antibiotic Stewardship Advisory Committee, this event marks the beginning of a yearlong collaborative. This webinar, featuring nationally-recognized faculty, will highlight two approaches for antibiotic stewardship that could be utilized by New York State hospitals. HANYS staff will also provide an overview of the HANYS collaborative.

Speakers:

  • Elizabeth Dodds Ashley, Pharm.D., Associate Director for Clinical Pharmacy Services and an Antimicrobial Stewardship Pharmacist at the University of Rochester Medical Center
  • Alan Sanders, M.D., Chief of Medicine and Infectious Disease Specialist, St. Peter’s Hospital, Albany

In recognition of the variation in available resources and established programs in New York State hospitals, the webinar will discuss two specific models for implementing antibiotic stewardship:

  • Model 1: A model driven by data maintained in electronic medical records (EMR), which could be implemented by hospitals that have an existing EMR system. This model would also be of interest to those hospitals that are in the process of building out their EMR system to allow for the creation of reports and tracking systems to inform quality improvement projects.
  • Model 2: An intensive care unit rounding model led by an infectious disease specialist and a clinical pharmacist that relies on chart review and evidence-based recommendations for antibiotic utilization adjustments to improve patient care and outcomes. This model could be used within one hospital or could be constructed as a partnership effort among several different hospitals to address resource shortages.

In addition to the above models, the program will also feature Mary Therriault, R.N., M.S., Senior Director, Quality and Research Initiatives, who will provide an overview of HANYS’ yearlong collaborative, which will include ongoing education, technical assistance, and limited data collection.
