Antibiotic Stewardship Collaborative Webinar: New Proposed Standards for Hospital Antibiotic Stewardship

June 28, 2016

This is a HANYS-Member Only Event.

4 - 5 p.m.

Through our Antibiotic Stewardship Collaborative, HANYS is supporting members as they accelerate their focus on antibiotic stewardship using the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Core Elements of Hospital Antibiotic Stewardship Programs as a framework. HANYS’ Collaborative is also assisting hospitals in accelerating their readiness for active surveillance of antibiotic utilization through the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN).

Session nine in HANYS Antibiotic Stewardship Collaborative program series will provide an overview of the Hospital and Critical Access Hospital Changes to Promote Innovation, Flexibility, and Improvement in Patient Care proposed rule, which was issued on June 16. If finalized, the rule would require hospital-wide infection prevention and control and antibiotic stewardship programs for the surveillance, prevention, and control of healthcare-associated infections and other infectious diseases, and for the appropriate use of antibiotics. Hospitals would also be required to designate leaders of the infection prevention and control program and the antibiotic stewardship program, who are qualified through education, training, experience, or certification. A fact sheet about the rule is available online.

The webinar will also feature Dr. Matthew S. Simon, Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases and an Assistant Professor of Healthcare Policy and Research in the Division of Comparative Effectiveness and Outcomes Research. He is the Associate Hospital Epidemiologist and an Assistant Attending Physician at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. Dr. Simon will provide an overview of NewYork-Presbyterian’s approach to hospital antibiotic stewardship, including challenges, successes, lessons learned, and next steps.

A formal commitment to the HANYS’ Collaborative is not required to register for this program; all member hospitals are invited to participate.
