Improving the Management of Acute Stroke Patients: Designing Patient Education Programs to Prevent Stroke as well as Education Patients with Previous Stroke

May 15, 2014

8 - 9:30 a.m.

HANYS and Greater New York Hospital Association (GNYHA) will host a Webinar on Stroke Quality Improvement for hospitals participating in the Coverdell Collaborative. We will review adult patient education techniques regarding stroke care and prevention, as well as customization of those techniques based on patient abilities.

This program is being held as part of New York State’s quality initiative to improve in-hospital care for acute stroke. In July 2012, the New York State Department of Health (DOH) was awarded a grant from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to implement a quality improvement initiative to improve in-hospital care for acute stroke. In addition to joining ten other states in the Paul Coverdell National Acute Stroke Registry, New York aims to use the grant funds to:

  • increase the use and reporting of data on indicators of stroke care collected from the stroke designation hospitals;
  • develop both aggregate and hospital-specific reports on stroke outcomes collected through the Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System (SPARCS); and
  • provide technical assistance to support both data quality assurance and in-hospital stroke care program quality assurance.
