HANYS' Breast Health Consumer Guide
- HANYS' Breast Cancer Demonstration Project (HANYS BCDP) is pleased to provide you with English and Spanish copies of our recently updated and translated Breast Health Consumer Guide. The Guide is written from a woman's perspective and includes practical information about mammography, insurance rights, and consumer options and protections. It is designed to help breast cancer patients navigate through the health care system.
The Guide was written with the assistance of the 14 HANYS BCDP health care sites. A pilot test of the Guide found that it was well received by both patients and providers because of its high quality content and user-friendly size and format.
Bulk copies with a minimum order of 50 English or 25 Spanish are now available to members at a cost of $1.10 per book (includes shipping cost).

This Adelphi University site has information regarding Adelphi's statewide toll-free Breast Cancer Hotline at (800) 877-8077. Information is available about free written materials from many sources including the National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society, as well as Adelphi's own material. - Breast Cancer: Ask NOAH
The Ask Noah site contains full-text breast cancer information for consumers. It is a collaborative project of CUNY, The Metropolitan New York Library Council, The New York Academy of Medicine, and The New York Public Library. The web site is available in English and Spanish. - CancerCare Focus on Breast Cancer
A resource created in collaboration with the Coalition of National Cancer Cooperative Groups. This site is for healthcare providers, patients, and their families. Audio and video webcasts and articles covering a broad spectrum of breast cancer detection, treatment, and support issues. The "Breast Cancer Forum," an interactive discussion board, has a contributing faculty of health professionals. Breast cancer bookstore and more. - Cancer Control PLANET (Plan, Link, Act, Network with Evidence-based Tools)
The National Cancer Institute (NCI), in partnership with the American Cancer Society and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) developed this Web site to provide links to evidence-based tools for cancer control planning, research, and clinical practice. This web site provides easy access to data and resources that can help planners, health educators, program staff, and researchers design, implement, and evaluate evidence-based cancer control programs. Regional contacts for partner organizations are listed. - Cancer Fatigue Awareness
This cancer fatigue site provides information on cancer fatigue to cancer patients and their caregivers. This Web site is a product of the Oncology Nursing Society. The site includes an area where users can have questions answered by oncology nurses, information on chemotherapy-induced anemia and other causes of cancer fatigue, as well as tips for coping with this condition. - Cancer Links
This site's goal is to make searching for cancer information on the Web faster and easier. It offers links to sites that have information regarding various types of cancers; this includes general information, pain management, alternative medicine, and charitable air transportation for cancer survivors. Dr. Koop's Web page offers information on many health issues; includes a section on cancer with some breast cancer information. - Gillette's Women's Cancer Connection
This site provides information related to cancer survivors' shared experiences; guidance and support for women, friends, and family; tools and resources; and communication guides for helping people with cancer to communicate with their partners, children, parents, friends, doctors, and co-workers. This site also presents articles that offer insight into challenging topics (i.e., how to talk to children about a parent's cancer diagnosis, getting the most out of patient-provider relationships, and feature articles written at age appropriate levels for children). - Harvard Center for Cancer Prevention - Your Cancer Risk
Your Cancer Risk is designed to estimate an individual's risk of cancer and provide personalized tips for prevention. It does not tell users if they will get cancer or not. The Web site also includes overviews and risk lists of breast and other cancers. Your Cancer Risk is based on the findings of the Risk Index Working Group at Harvard University. - Oncolink Breast Cancer: General Information
The University of Pennsylvania's Oncolink Breast Cancer site provides information regarding aspects of breast health, cancer treatment, and survivor issues. It is linked directly to the National Cancer Institute's CANCERLIT database. The Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Tool is a free download from this site. - The Partnership for Clear Health Communication: Ask Me 3
The Partnership for Clear Health Communication, a coalition of national organizations, developed the Ask Me 3 program, a patient education program to promote communication between health care providers and patients to improve health outcomes. This Web site includes free downloadable information about the Ask Me 3 program. Resources include fact sheets and brochures for providers and patients (in English and Spanish), statistics and research on health literacy, materials to assist with media outreach, and the National Medical Association Cultural Competence Primer, which helps health professionals gain awareness of the significance of cultural competence within the clinical practice framework. - The University of Wisconsin Comprehensive Cancer Center
