St. John's Episcopal Hospital advances cancer care in the community

Premature mortality is increasing in the U.S., in part due to cancer. In Rockaway, where cancer-related premature deaths are alarmingly high, St. John's Episcopal Hospital collaborated with DOH to become a credentialed provider of the Cancer Services Program.

This collaboration enables the hospital to offer free breast, cervical and colorectal cancer screenings, diagnostic follow-up services and referrals to treatment for uninsured and underinsured individuals at or below 250% of the federal poverty level.

The program's impact is evident in the following metrics for 2022-2023:

  • Clinical breast examinations: A total of 239 individuals received CBEs, ensuring early detection and screening for breast cancer.
  • Pap smears: 123 individuals received Pap smears, playing a crucial role in detecting cervical cancer in its early stages.
  • Mammograms: 218 individuals had access to mammograms, contributing to early detection and improved treatment outcomes for breast cancer.

These metrics reflect SJEH’s commitment to improving community health and addressing prevalent disparities within its service area. Through the cancer services program, the hospital empowers uninsured and underinsured individuals by providing life-saving screenings and diagnostic services.
