Statement by HANYS President Bea Grause Regarding the Senate Vote on ACA Repeal
HANYS and our hospital and health system members throughout New York State are profoundly grateful to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), who tirelessly led a unified Democratic caucus, standing firm on protecting meaningful healthcare coverage, and to Senators Susan Collins (R-ME), John McCain (R-AZ), and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), who, in the face of forceful political pressure, cast deciding “no” votes on the Senate GOP “skinny” Affordable Care Act (ACA) repeal bill. Their votes preserved meaningful healthcare coverage for tens of millions of Americans.
The words of Senator Schumer and Senator McCain, calling for a return to a bipartisan and thoughtful legislative process worthy of the American public, should be a guiding principle for Congress to openly debate and thoughtfully address Obamacare’s shortcomings, while preserving meaningful healthcare coverage and ensuring a strong and accessible healthcare delivery system. In the short term, HANYS urges Congress to swiftly stabilize the insurance markets, ensure provision of consumer cost sharing reductions, and lift pending Medicaid Disproportionate Share Hospital payment reductions.
HANYS and our members are committed to working with all members of the New York State Congressional Delegation and with all members of Congress on both sides of the aisle, in collaboration with the American Hospital Association, to strengthen the healthcare delivery system and increase access to meaningful healthcare coverage.
The Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS) is the only statewide hospital and continuing care association in New York State, representing 500 non-profit and public hospitals, nursing homes, home care agencies, and other healthcare organizations.
