HANYS Announces Establishment of "The Adell Y. Smith HANYS Healthcare Leadership Scholarship" for Graduate Students of University at Albany's School of Public Health

30-year HANYS employee seeks to boost diversity within healthcare and healthcare management

ALBANY, N.Y.––The Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS) announces the establishment of "The Adell Y. Smith HANYS Healthcare Leadership Scholarship." This scholarship will support graduate students of University at Albany's School of Public Health.

Adell Y. Smith, an executive assistant employed by HANYS since 1988, established this endowed scholarship to help women of underrepresented populations prepare for leadership roles in healthcare and healthcare management.

"I want to help young people–women, especially," said Ms. Smith. "I was so inspired to see Bea Grause become the first female president of HANYS, and I thought wouldn't it be great if we found an African-American version of Bea? I hope more minority women will see the opportunity for leadership roles in healthcare policy."

Ms. Smith made a donation to The University at Albany Foundation to establish the scholarship. The scholarship will primarily support African-American female students, as well as female students from other underrepresented populations, pursuing careers in healthcare and healthcare management. The first award will be granted to a student ahead of the fall 2018 semester.

"Adell's thoughtfulness and generosity are truly commendable, but they do not surprise me," said Bea Grause, President of HANYS. "We are honored to be a part of this initiative, and excited to help Adell support the development of future healthcare leaders."

In addition to making a financial contribution to the scholarship, HANYS is creating a Diversity in Healthcare Leadership internship program to provide real-world work experiences to graduate students from under-represented populations.

Students can learn more about Ms. Smith, the scholarship, and the internship on HANYS’ website.
