For Immediate Release:

Statement Against Gun Violence by Bea Grause, RN, JD, President of HANYS

ALBANY, NY — The Healthcare Association of New York State stands with doctors across our state and nation in strong and unyielding opposition to gun violence.  Day in and out, our caregivers work around the clock to save the lives of shooting victims and often face violence themselves, as we saw at Mercy Hospital in Chicago this week.

Doctors, nurses and other medical professionals have a great deal to contribute to this public health crisis.   My past experiences as an emergency room nurse and the collective experiences of millions of caregivers who have witnessed the tragic effects of gun violence, have amply fueled our resolve to try and stop it.  Speaking out against gun violence in an effort to protect our patients, our co-workers and our communities is very much in our lane.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there were 900 reported deaths by firearms in New York State in 2016.  Nine hundred lives lost, thousands of families shattered.  Sadly, the national average is higher than New York State’s statistics.

Gun violence remains a priority in our array of complex public health challenges to address.  Our hospitals across New York, from the largest urban to the most rural critical access hospital, will get in, and stay in whatever lane needed in our efforts to prevent and mitigate all forms of violence.

The Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS) is the only statewide hospital and continuing care association in New York State, representing hundreds of non-profit and public hospitals, nursing homes, home care agencies, and other healthcare organizations.
