Palliative Care Series - Facilitating Goals of Care Discussions in Complex Circumstances

March 24, 2015

This event is open to HANYS' Members and Non-Members

3 - 4 p.m.

This webinar is the final session of a ten-part, monthly series for healthcare providers seeking to initiate or expand access to palliative care, offered by HANYS with support from the Milbank Foundation for Rehabilitation. This session will feature nationally-renowned palliative care expert David Weissman, M.D.,who will discuss the key elements of facilitating a family meeting in complex and special circumstances.

Negotiating goals of care with patients and families facing serious illnesses can be difficult, particularly when there is a conflict between aspirations and what is medically likely or possible. Reaching attainable care decisions that reflect the patient’s preferences can be further challenging when dysfunctional family dynamics place barriers to effective communication and achieving a successful outcome. During this webinar, Dr. Weissman will discuss an organized approach to leading these meetings and strategies for managing conflict.

This session is offered as a follow-up on topics discussed during HANYS’ November 20, 2014 webinar including the elements of integrating palliative care into the acute care setting. The concepts and strategies offered for this webinar may be applied across settings of care.

During this webinar, you will learn:

  • a ten-step approach to a family goal-setting meeting;
  • three strategies for resolving conflict concerning end-of-life goals; and
  • management options for working with a dysfunctional family system.
