This year’s skill-building sessions:

Opening Session  |  Getting to the heart of the matter: The keys to critical thinking  |  Oct. 3, 3 – 4:15 p.m.
Bonnie Low-Kramen, TEDx speaker, Bestselling author, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Ultimate Assistant Training Inc.

Critical thinking is defined as an ability to question; to acknowledge and test previously held assumptions; to recognize ambiguity; to examine, interpret, evaluate, reason and reflect; to make informed judgments and decisions; and to clarify, articulate and justify positions.

That's what the top administrators must do every day in order to stay relevant and invaluable to their executives and teams. But that's not all you do.

On top of all this, staff must understand the subtext and the context around the decisions their leaders make. This is an in-demand, learned skill. This refers to knowledge of the company culture and the impact of economic and social pressures at any given time. These are the people who run the what-ifs.

This interactive session will focus on the necessary and relevant skills for assistants to excel as critical thinkers and code-crackers of the bigger picture. It will help you build confidence in not only thinking critically but also speaking to what you conclude. The discussion will educate, celebrate, motivate, empower and inspire action.

Topics include:
  • real-life examples of critical thinking from your peers;
  • the pros and cons of critical analysis;
  • the difference between fact and opinion;
  • cracking the code of the intangibles and the optics of decisions; and
  • the value of transparency and consensus.

Finding an extra hour in your day: Time management tips and tricks  |  Oct. 10, 3 – 4 p.m.
Randy Dean, MBA, the E-mail Sanity Expert®

Randy Dean will use humor and high energy to dive into many of the most common areas of productivity loss afflicting busy assistants today and explore room for productivity gain.

This session will help high performers learn several new and immediately useful strategies for finding a few minutes on tasks, activities and actions you are already doing, leading to at least an extra hour of productivity every day.

This session will review tips for:
  • managing multiple projects;
  • maintaining “traction” when dealing with tasks and interruptions;
  • managing your emails more efficiently;
  • clearing the clutter in your mind for better focus and attention;
  • keeping staff on task;
  • tracking “who owes you what” and getting that information on time; and
  • managing your calendar (and your executive’s) for improved time and relationship management.

Stress management for busy executive assistants  |  Oct. 17, 3 – 4 p.m.
Sandy Geroux, MS, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, WOWplace International, LLC

The days of limited duties and spare time during the day are long gone. Typically, today’s administrative professionals not only have routine daily tasks, but also undertake special projects, managerial responsibilities and teamwork challenges, not to mention the unexpected assignments that arise on an almost hourly basis. This high-paced environment can cause feelings of stress which can be managed in various ways.

In this interactive session, attendees will:
  • discover how to prevent, deal with and learn from stressful situations.
  • use five skills and abilities to overcome personal stressors, such as perfectionism, assumptions and more;
  • find practical techniques and suggestions for handling periodic and ongoing stress in their work and home lives;
  • recognize and eliminate trigger words and actions and turn their responses into positive actions;
  • learn to take their work seriously but themselves lightly through the liberal and effective use of humor; and
  • shift their mindsets regarding what stresses them (or not).

PowerPoint emergency surgery  |  Oct. 24, 3 – 4 p.m.
Neil Malek, President, Knack Training

As an administrative professional, you are often given an existing presentation and need to ‘clean it up’ and make enhancements at a moment’s notice. Any good presenter will tell you that creating a great presentation involves planning and time. Sometimes, though, you don't have that luxury!

This session will focus on the quickest, easiest changes to a presentation you can make to improve it the most. This will involve hidden PowerPoint tools and features, as well as simple design choices that can be applied to any scenario.

In this session, attendee will learn to:
  • update an entire presentation with only a few clicks;
  • create multi-element slides in seconds;
  • organize and control elements with the Selection Pane;
  • unify concepts throughout your presentation with color; and
  • apply essential accessibility rules to confusing slides.
