Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center transforms care for adolescents and young adults

Cancer is the leading cause of disease-related death in people ages 15 to 39; this age group has seen fewer benefits from research and treatment advances than children and older adults with cancer. To lead change, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center established the Lisa and Scott Stuart Center for Adolescent and Young Adult Cancers in September 2021.

This comprehensive clinical and research enterprise is dedicated to closing these gaps and transforming the experience, care and outcomes of AYAs with cancer worldwide. The AYA initiative is committed to meeting the unique needs of patients ages 15 to 39 by:

  • uniting experts across specialties to create and deliver evidence-based care for patients and define new standards of excellence in the field;
  • developing more clinical trials and increasing enrollment;
  • providing direct patient support to address fertility, sexual health, education, careers, financial stressors, insurance and mental and spiritual health; and
  • improving connectivity between patients through The Lounge, both a physical recreation space and secure mobile app that offers access to peer connection, activities and resources.

In the United States alone, 90,000 new cancer cases in this age group are projected each year. MSK is at the forefront in this field, treating more than 5,000 of these patients each year.
