Innovation Spotlight: New York Hospitals Are Improving Health, Enhancing Quality, and Reducing Costs.

New York Providers Improving Care Through EHR Use

Successful use of electronic health records (EHRs) and health information exchange (HIE) can improve the accuracy of diagnoses, care coordination, health outcomes, and also increase patients' participation in their care. New York hospitals and hospital-affiliated physician practices are devoting tremendous resources to successful adoption and use of EHR technology and HIE. Maturing HIE, including through New York's developing Statewide Health Information Network for New York (SHIN-NY) allows health information to follow the patient, ensuring clinicians who care for that patient in multiple settings can access, in real-time, the patient's health information.

Since the establishment of the federal Medicare and Medicaid EHR Incentive Payment, "Meaningful Use" Programs, hundreds of New York healthcare providers have successfully attested to Meaningful Use, receiving temporary incentive payments while driving widespread use of EHRs.
