Innovation Spotlight: New York Hospitals Are Improving Health, Enhancing Quality, and Reducing Costs.

Nyack Reduces Patient Falls

Patient falls present serious safety, quality, and financial challenges to patients, families, and healthcare providers. Falls are a leading cause of serious injury to senior citizens and can add days to a hospital stay.

Nyack Hospital identified areas for improvement in the assessment of patients identified as at risk for falling, an alert system for identified high-risk patients, new provider education, and implementation of effective, individualized fall prevention initiatives.

These multiple team-based fall prevention initiatives resulted in a 43% decrease in the medical-surgical patient fall rate from the fourth quarter of 2012 through the second quarter of 2013.
