Access to dental care can often be a challenge for people with disabilities. The Strong Memorial Hospital University of Rochester Medical Center "Preserving Smiles" program is a patient-centered model of oral healthcare for individuals with intellectual, learning, or developmental disabilities.
The program's keystone is the training of dental teams to promote delivery of care that respects each person's unique needs. The program treats 550 individuals at more than 1,200 office visits annually, providing dental care focused on the dignity of individuals with special needs. Preserving Smiles also educates current and future dental professionals on the best practices for treating patients with special needs.
