By the numbers: How NY hospitals are driving growth and improving health in their communities

New York’s hospitals and health systems generate $247B in economic activity annually.

Rensselaer, NY – The Healthcare Association of New York State’s updated economic and community benefit reports underscore the vital role of New York’s hospitals and health systems. Across the state, they drive growth and create jobs while delivering essential care. These analyses highlight more than numbers — they tell the story of hospitals and health systems deeply rooted in their communities and building a healthier, stronger future for all New Yorkers.

Economic and community benefits
The latest analyses find that New York’s statewide hospitals and health systems generate about $247 billion in economic activity annually (10.4% of the state’s gross domestic product, or GDP). Often the largest employers in their communities and spurring additional job growth in their surrounding communities, hospitals and health systems support 979,000 jobs statewide. Hospitals generate $36.9 billion tax dollars and $66.8 billion in payroll expenditures.

“We all count on our hospitals, and not just for the critical care services they provide," said Bea Grause, RN, JD, president of Healthcare Association New York State. “Employees, their families, local business owners and so many more rely on our hospitals to be stabilizing forces. These community anchors help to ensure our communities are attractive places for current and potential residents to live, work and thrive."

Adhering to their charitable mission, New York hospitals contribute $19.4 billion (20% of total expenses) in community benefits and investments, including community health initiatives and their coverage and subsidization of care for low-income, elderly and underserved New Yorkers. This figure does not include the billions more in community benefit provided by New York’s 21 public hospitals, which are exempt from this IRS reporting.

Patients cared for by New York’s hospitals
The latest analyses document the millions of patients treated in outpatient, emergency room and inpatient settings, as well as how many babies were delivered in these hospitals.

In New York, Medicare- and Medicaid-covered patients make up 72% of all people admitted to hospitals and 62% of all outpatients provided care, though only 53% of New York hospitals’ patient service revenue comes from these public insurance payers.

A recent survey of New York hospitals found seven in ten do not have the operating margins needed to maintain and improve access to care. With harmful H.R. 1 impacts looming, HANYS is urging state and federal lawmakers to do all they can to protect New Yorkers’ access to care.
