HANYS President and CEO Bea Grause announces plans to retire

Board to initiate national search for statewide healthcare association’s next leader.

Bea Grause

RENSSELAER, NY - Healthcare Association of New York State President and CEO Bea Grause, RN, JD, today announced her plans to retire in the summer of 2026, after a more than 45-year-long healthcare career.

Grause joined HANYS as president and CEO in 2016. She previously served as president and CEO of the Vermont Association of Hospitals and Health Systems for 14 years. Grause also spent 10 years in Washington, D.C., where she served as a congressional staffer and later, in senior government affairs and general counsel positions. Grause began her career as a registered nurse, primarily in the emergency room and intensive care areas.

Her decade-long tenure at HANYS has been shaped by the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as significant advocacy efforts in both Albany and Washington, D.C. Her leadership has focused on preserving New Yorkers’ access to care, increasing healthcare coverage, improving healthcare quality and bolstering the state’s healthcare workforce.

Grause has brought significant attention to the long-term systemic challenges facing New York’s healthcare system, as illustrated in HANYS’ 2024 report, The Case for Change. Most recently Grause has advocated on behalf of New York’s hospitals and health systems as they face fiscal and operational challenges that preceded and are projected to be exacerbated by H.R. 1.

“New York’s healthcare community has been lucky to have Bea at the HANYS helm these past ten years,” said Kenneth Gibbs, CEO, Maimonides Health, and chair, HANYS board of trustees. “Through the pandemic and beyond, she has demonstrated tremendous skill and passion and been a voice with authenticity and credibility. Bea always puts our patients at the center of her work, and that has, without a doubt, had a positive impact on every New Yorker.”

The HANYS board of trustees will conduct a comprehensive search for the company’s next president and CEO with the aid of WittKieffer. Grause will continue in all aspects of her role until a successor has been brought on board and will ensure continuity by supporting the transition.
