HANYS celebrates 100th anniversary, honors hospitals’ partnership and commitment to New Yorkers’ access to care

In 1925, a group of hospital leaders came together in Albany, in an all-volunteer capacity, to form the Hospital Association of the State of New York. We’ve been renamed a few times, but 100 years later, the Healthcare Association of New York State is Always There for Healthcare, supporting our member hospitals and health systems and advancing New Yorkers’ access to care through advocacy, education and analysis.

HANYS was pleased to celebrate our centennial with our members this week at our 56th Annual Membership Conference.

“We are proud and honored to celebrate HANYS’ 100-year anniversary. Over the last century, we’ve learned that by working together, New York's healthcare providers can overcome any challenge,” said HANYS President Bea Grause, RN, JD. “Through it all we’ve stuck together and we’ve done right by our patients, right by each other, and right by the people of New York state. Our hospitals and health systems will always put patients first and I am certain that HANYS will be there to support them for the next 100 years.”

During this special event, HANYS honored our members with HANYS’ 2025 Distinguished Service Award in recognition of their partnership with the association and the relentless work they do to improve healthcare across the state. Together, we celebrated the association and members’ collective achievements and affirmed our commitment to another century of supporting the patients and communities served by our members.

“This year, instead of presenting our Distinguished Service Award to one person, we are honoring all our members. Each day, New York's hospitals and health systems go above and beyond to make a positive difference in our communities,” said Bea Grause. “Our members are the reason we’ve been here for 100 years. Every single member, past and present, has contributed to our collective success.”

HANYS' board of trustees established the Distinguished Service Award in 1979 to recognize individuals who have demonstrated outstanding personal service in the healthcare field in one or more of the following areas: patient welfare, hospital administration, residential healthcare administration, local and state healthcare, public service and promotion of legislation to achieve better healthcare. See past honorees on HANYS’ website.
