Mercy Medical Center Improves Patient Safety by Reducing Falls

In an effort to improve quality and patient safety, Mercy Medical Center formed a strategic planning team of registered nurse staff and ancillary members to improve its fall prevention/reduction program. At the beginning of the project, they reviewed evidence-based literature and shared knowledge to identify areas for improvement. The team then met with the system-based falls reduction team, and participated in sub-groups defining policy, education, and post-fall analysis.

These collaborative efforts resulted in the institution of a post-fall investigation tool to better understand the reasons patients were falling, and identify patterns or trends. This was implemented in addition to the high-risk interventions already in place. As a result, Mercy Medical Center was able to meet and exceed its goal, and decrease falls by 22%.
