Hospital Volunteers Recognized for Commitment to Communities
John T. Mather Memorial Hospital and Eastern Long Island Hospital Auxiliaries Named HANYS’ Auxiliaries of the Year
ALBANY, N.Y.—The Healthcare Association of New York State congratulates the two recipients of its 2017 Auxiliary of the Year Award: the auxiliaries of John T. Mather Memorial Hospital and Eastern Long Island Hospital both provide invaluable contributions to their healthcare organizations and communities.
“The volunteerism, population outreach, and advocacy that New York State’s auxiliaries provide are tremendous assets to our hospitals,” said HANYS President Bea Grause. “HANYS appreciates the hard work of all our member auxiliaries and volunteers and their ongoing commitment to the health of all New Yorkers.”
HANYS established the Auxiliary of the Year Award to recognize numerous ways that auxiliaries help strengthen New York State’s healthcare system. This year, the award was presented to two auxiliaries that demonstrated outstanding achievement in community outreach, collaboration, partnerships, advocacy, and new initiatives within their communities. One award was presented to an auxiliary for a healthcare facility with 100 beds or fewer, and a second award to an auxiliary affiliated with a facility with more than 100 beds.
HANYS’ large hospital category winner is the John T. Mather Memorial Auxiliary. Since the Auxiliary was founded, it has raised more than $6 million, including recently donating $210,000 to support the needs of the hospital’s environmental, engineering, and nutritional services departments. The Mather Hospital Auxiliary participates in a hospital event called Paint Port Pink, which includes 113 community partners such as the local school district, library, and theater, to increase awareness about the importance of breast cancer screenings. The Auxiliary distributes literature about breast health and pink lights to the local businesses along the main streets in Port Jefferson to display in October.
This year, the Auxiliary staffed an advocacy table encouraging employees, volunteers, and visitors to email their legislators about the harm that proposals to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act would cause for their community, including losing healthcare coverage.
HANYS’ small hospital category winner, Eastern Long Island Hospital Auxiliary, made a historic milestone contribution of $400,000 to Eastern Long Island Hospital in 2016, with more than $3.7 million contributed in the past ten years. The Auxiliary was also the recipient of the 2016 North Fork Chamber of Commerce Community Service Organization Award. The Auxiliary used the 2016 Community Service Award as a springboard to increase Auxiliary membership and promote the hospital in newspapers, on the Internet, Facebook, and CBS News Radio.
The Eastern Long Island Hospital Auxiliary’s grassroots advocacy includes reaching out to state and federal elected officials on healthcare issues via telephone and letter-writing campaigns.
Awardees were honored at a ceremony at HANYS’ Annual Institute for Healthcare Auxiliaries and Volunteer Leaders in Saratoga Springs on October 26, 2017.
TheHealthcare Association of New York State (HANYS) is the only statewide hospital and continuing care association in New York State, representing 500 non-profit and public hospitals, nursing homes, home care agencies, and other healthcare organizations.
