Statement by HANYS President Bea Grause, RN, JD, on the attack on the U.S. Capitol
Yesterday, our nation watched in horror as the beacon of our democracy, the United States Capitol, was overrun and vandalized by a violent mob during one of our most sacred political processes: the peaceful transfer of power. Far too often, we in the hospital community see how violence can harm our patients and our communities. Yesterday’s attack on our Capitol not only put people’s lives in danger, it threatened the core of our democracy. HANYS strongly condemns yesterday’s violence and we call on Congress and President-elect Biden to help heal and unite our country – together.
As House Speaker Nancy Pelosi pointed out in her comments last night, we are one country with one destiny. As hospital and health system leaders, we have and will continue to do our part by keeping our doors and arms open for all who need our care. On behalf of our members, I look forward to working with my fellow Americans to heal our nation, end the COVID-19 pandemic and work toward a brighter, more prosperous future for all.
