Statement from HANYS President Bea Grause, RN, JD, on voting rights in America

A hospital’s emergency room doors are always open to everyone as part of our promise to the communities we serve. Democracy must operate in the same inclusive way. As healthcare leaders, we believe voter restrictions run counter to this fundamental tenet of democracy, and threaten every community’s ability to be fully represented in elected government.

Whether it’s the census count or the vote count, HANYS supports each American’s ability to have their voice heard. For years, HANYS has spear-headed many efforts to ensure our patients have access to the care they deserve. Our advocacy efforts have included broader issues such as program eligibility and representation so that federal and state government aid extends to all in need. Every vote matters in a democracy just as every life matters in healthcare.

The future of our democracy depends on uniting this country. Unity requires inclusion. The doors of democracy and voting rights need to be wide open and accessible to all.
