HANYS highlights hospitals’ economic and community impacts in updated reports

Reports highlight hospital and health systems’ economic and jobs activity generated, key healthcare services, community benefit activity and reliance on government payers

ALBANY, NY – The Healthcare Association of New York State today shares its updated economic and community benefit reports. Revised annually to reflect the latest data available, these reports showcase the tremendous contributions New York’s hospitals and health systems make to their local communities and the state.

The updated reports find New York’s hospitals and health systems generate approximately $192 billion in economic activity annually (9.6% of the state’s gross domestic product) and 856,000 jobs, among other essential community impacts.

Reports available online include: Statewide, hospital-specific, health system-specific and by region, congressional district, State Senate district and Assembly district.

This release follows the December 2022 publication of Critical Condition, which explored the financial and workforce crises facing New York’s hospitals. Findings of a fall 2022 member survey include: 49% of hospitals reported reducing and/or eliminating services to mitigate staffing challenges; 64% reported a negative operating margin and 85% reported negative or unsustainable operating margins of 3% or less.

With pandemic-related government support ending and expenses continuing to escalate, hospitals’ dire fiscal crisis is likely to only get worse. Hospitals’ continued viability as healthcare providers and key job creators in their communities, as highlighted in these latest economic and community benefit reports, is in immediate jeopardy.

“Hospitals are the heart of communities all across New York,” said Bea Grause, RN, JD, president, Healthcare Association of New York State. “All New Yorkers benefit when our hospitals and health systems are healthy and strong.”
