Statement by HANYS President Bea Grause, RN, JD, on Governor Hochul’s veto of “wrongful death” bill
HANYS thanks Gov. Hochul for rejecting S.74-A/A.6770, which, if enacted, would have increased medical liability costs and made it more difficult for providers to deliver care to patients and their loved ones.
By driving up medical professional liability premiums an estimated 39.5%, this bill would have led to a physician exodus from New York and exacerbated health inequities, disproportionately impacting communities served by financially struggling safety net providers.
HANYS commends Gov. Hochul for taking a stand against this flawed bill. New York has the highest medical malpractice costs in the nation and desperately needs sensible, equitable and comprehensive medical liability reform. HANYS stands ready to work with policy leaders and other interested parties to fix New York’s broken medical liability system to ensure fairness and justice for all New Yorkers.
