Change the ending to someone’s story: April is organ donation month
In April, we celebrate National Donate Life Month and encourage our hospitals and health systems to help promote awareness about organ donation. New York state continues to have the third highest need for organ donations while also having the lowest percentage of registered donors.
Continued advocacy has led to an increase from 895 people donating organs in 2017 to 1,010 in 2018, but there continues to be a dire need for donors as there are 9,474 New Yorkers that need a life-saving organ transplants.
HANYS continues to support organ donation through public awareness, advocacy and policy. To provide guidance, HANYS developed a toolkit for hospitals and health systems, with resources and additional ideas to support your efforts to promote organ donation. The toolkit includes a video from HANYS President, Bea Grause on the importance of organ donation. Please use this toolkit to encourage members of your staff and community to register and become an organ donor. Your local/regional Organ Procurement Organization or Donate Life New York State can be contacted for more information and promotional materials. Thank you to our member hospitals and health systems for your efforts to promote this important community health cause. Contact: Christopher Bradley
