New York hospitals’ $201B impact: HANYS releases updated economic and community benefit reports
Rensselaer, NY – The Healthcare Association of New York State’s updated economic and community benefit analyses once again show New York’s hospitals provide vital healthcare services and community benefits. They also serve as powerful, irreplaceable economic engines and top employers in their local communities and for the entire state.
The reports find New York’s hospitals and health systems generate about $201 billion in economic activity annually (9.6% of the state’s gross domestic product) and 859,000 jobs, among other essential statewide and local impacts.
The reports explore the patients served by these anchor institutions. In 2022, New York’s hospitals and health systems provided care to 57,900,000 people in outpatient settings, treated 7,800,000 people in emergency departments, admitted 2,200,000 people to inpatient units and delivered 207,000 babies.
Adhering to their charitable mission, New York hospitals contributed $16.1 billion (19% of total expenses) in community benefits and investments, including community health initiatives and their coverage and subsidization of care for low-income, elderly and under-served New Yorkers. This figure does not include the billions more in community benefit provided by New York’s 21 public hospitals, which are exempt from this IRS reporting.
“Despite facing strong headwinds, hospitals continue to do incredible work every day to improve their community’s health and wellbeing and care for patients in their times of need, while generating a staggering amount of economic activity,” said Bea Grause, RN, JD, president, HANYS. “I’m so proud of how our hospitals provide for their patients, their staff, their communities and all of New York.”
