HANYS Presents 2016 Auxiliary of the Year Award to St. Mary’s Healthcare Auxiliary and Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center Auxiliary
ALBANY, N.Y. – The Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS) presented its 2016 Auxiliary of the Year Award to two auxiliaries that have demonstrated outstanding achievement in community outreach and advocacy: St. Mary’s Healthcare Auxiliary and Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center Auxiliary.
St. Mary’s Healthcare Auxiliary, Amsterdam, New York
Winner: Small Healthcare Facility Auxiliary (100 beds or fewer)
St. Mary’s Healthcare Auxiliary provides service and support for St. Mary’s Healthcare and the community through health awareness, advocacy, and fundraising. The Auxiliary is a dynamic group of more than 300 members who make numerous contributions to their community. Auxilians recently provided financial and direct support to the hospital’s complimentary therapies department, co-sponsored the annual conference, and became Healing Touch volunteers. They also pledged $250,000 in support of the hospital’s new off-site patient care pavilion, helping to fund the cancer clinic and women’s health services.
Auxilians create gift/food baskets for local migrant workers who are financially in need, and the Auxiliary raised funds to repair and expand a community walking/running track at the Memorial Campus of St. Mary’s Healthcare. The Auxiliary collaborates with a variety of community organizations.
The Auxiliary actively promotes the Sheriff’s Yellow Dot Program, which encourages people to place basic medical information in a particular place in their car and/or home along with the yellow dot. Auxilians work to encourage drivers in the community to take and keep the “No Texting Pledge,” and they promote flu shot clinics throughout the fall and winter and regularly volunteer at the hospital’s blood drives.
A new initiative that St. Mary’s Healthcare Auxiliary joined is the Mission Cupboard. Many patients discharged from the hospital leave without access to food or personal hygiene products. The Mission Cupboard is stocked with food, hygiene items, seasonal items such as hats and gloves, and other necessities. Patients in need are given these critical items and information about local service agencies.
Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center Auxiliary, Ogdensburg
Winner: Large Healthcare Facility Auxiliary (more than 100 beds)
Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center Auxiliary consists of dedicated volunteers who are fundraisers, ambassadors, and advocates for Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center. Their mission is to enhance health and life with compassion and excellence. They play a key role in the success of the medical center by enlisting the best people to enrich the patient experience.
Recent accomplishments of the Auxiliary include donating more than $1.6 million to the medical center to help with capital campaigns, purchase equipment for patients, and finance renovations. They purchased and distributed 500 stuffed animals to children who come to the Medical Center for surgery or who need a friendly hug from a furry friend. They also provide six $1,000 scholarships to local high school seniors entering the healthcare field.
The Auxiliary partners with and supports many community organizations and activities including: the Gouverneur Breast Walk, working with the local police, fire, and rescue squads promoting the We Have A Little Emergency (WHALE) program, donating 2,300 pairs of socks to children in the community, and working with the hospital foundation office to assist with donor appreciation events.
The Auxiliary is very involved in advocacy and members are committed to letter-writing campaigns to local, state, and federal leaders. Several times a year, the Auxiliary donates food and money to the Ogdensburg Snack Pack Program. The Auxiliary just completed a campaign where members personally donated $500 and the Auxiliary matched it. Children from local schools who fit the criteria will go home with a backpack of food to help them through the weekend.
