Webinar

Noon-1:00 p.m.

Registration is open to HANYS Members and Non-Members

HANYS’ Statewide Opioid Addiction Prevention and Management Collaborative supports members’ efforts to improve the delivery of care to patients experiencing opioid addiction and manage the care of patients with substance use disorders. Our Opioid Lunch and Learn sessions focus on key themes identified through member feedback in the regional roundtable sessions, including alternative pain management, coordination of care, data implications, stigma, and prescribing practices and protocols.

Thursday, January 10: Diversification of ED Processes to Address Substance Use as Part of Usual Care: Heightened Response to the Opioid Crisis

Presenters:

  • Jonathan Morgenstern, PhD, Director, Addiction Services, Northwell Health; Professor of Psychiatry, Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell
  • Sandeep Kapoor, MD, MS-HPPL, Director, SBIRT, Northwell Health; Assistant Professor of Medicine and Emergency Medicine, Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell
  • Sanjey Gupta, MD, Chair, Emergency Medicine, Southside Hospital, Northwell Health; Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine, Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell

This webinar will provide an overview of Northwell's team-based approach to empower clinical teams to address substance use as part of usual care in the emergency department (ED) setting. The discussion will demonstrate the value of evidence-based tools, enhanced workflows, thoughtful frontline education and structured implementation. Learn how Northwell capitalized on the foundation of Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) to build a care framework including the Naloxone Saturation Campaign (NAL-SAT), ED-initiated medication-assisted treatment, and external navigation programs.

Through this webinar, you will:

  • explore multiple avenues available to diversify an emergency department's portfolio of substance use-related services;
  • understand the important role the ED-setting represents in addressing and treating substance use issues; and
  • be able to select the most appropriate starting point to better address substance use as part of usual care in your emergency department.
