Lunch and Learn Series: Mitigating Unconscious Bias to Enhance the Patient Experience and Improve Patient Outcomes

October 31, 2019

Noon - 1 p.m.

Registration is open to HANYS members and non-members.

This session will address how implicit or unconscious bias impacts our decision making and how we interact with one another. We will examine strategies to become more self-aware of our own biases and how we are able to mitigate those biases to enable us to provide more equitable care to patients and treat one another inclusively and respectfully. In this session, participants will:

  • gain an understanding of key cultural concepts related to patient care;
  • identify how bias and the processes of the unconscious mind can impact how we interact with patients and compromise inclusion and equity;
  • understand how unconscious bias impacts the work environment and the patient experience; and
  • learn strategies to mitigate unconscious bias and practice more conscious awareness in a healthcare setting.

Speaker:
Pamela Abner, MPA, CPXP, Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer Office for Diversity and Inclusion, Mount Sinai Health System
