Glens Falls Hospital Provides Healthy Food to High-Need Communities

The lack of access to fresh, healthy food for rural, high-need communities can lead to a slew of health issues in those populations. In an effort to combat this social determinant of health, Glens Falls Hospital introduced the Free Mobile Food Pantry program in 2016.

In cooperation with local food pantries and service agencies, Glens Falls Hospital’s Free Mobile Food Pantry provides fresh produce to 16 distribution sites in the community, cultivating relationships with local residents and increasing awareness about the importance of quality nutrition for good health and the prevention of chronic disease. To assist in execution and ensure program sustainability, the hospital established a base of dedicated volunteers. The hospital collaborated with local organization partners and leveraged its own resources and systems already in place to increase efficiency.

The Free Mobile Food Pantry distributed 17,557 pounds of food to 2,429 households over the past two years. A further expansion of distribution sites is planned in an effort to reach even more of those in need.
