Mercy Hospital is Reducing Mortality Rates with Pulse Oximeter System

Since continuous patient monitoring improves patient care and safety, Mercy Hospital of Buffalo implemented a 30-month clinical trial of continuous patient monitoring using advanced pulse oximetry, the monitoring of oxygen levels in a person's blood, with direct clinician notification. If a patient event occurred, such as a dangerous decrease in blood oxygenation, alarms were triggered at the nursing station and nurses were alerted directly by pagers.

The outcome of the trial was an 89% reduction in all-cause mortality and complete elimination of preventable death on the pilot floor. Mercy Hospital has now expanded the program from the trial of 64 beds to 250 beds.
