Innovation Spotlight: New York Hospitals Are Improving Health, Enhancing Quality, and Reducing Costs.

Winthrop-University Hospital Reduces Hypoglycemic Episodes

In a study of more than 100,000 hospital admissions in patients with diabetes, those who experienced hypoglycemic episodes (low blood glucose) had longer hospital stays, a higher risk of inpatient mortality, a 39% increase in hospital costs, and a 58% increased likelihood of discharge to a skilled nursing facility. Although episodes of hypoglycemia can never be eliminated, they can be reduced.

Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola reduced the prevalence of hypoglycemia to less than 0.5% through adoption of clinical practice guidelines, standardized protocols, technology, and patient-centered care. Most importantly, because of this commitment, patients with diabetes feel safe, protected, and respected.
