The number of college students hospitalized for psychiatric reasons has tripled over the last 20 years. Often these students have behavioral health needs that cannot be completely resolved during a short hospital stay. To help these college students with ongoing behavioral health issues, The Zucker Hillside Hospital, part of Northwell Health, formed a behavioral health partnership with local colleges and universities. This partnership developed emergency protocols, enhanced school-hospital communication, and specialized evaluation and treatment plans to address the behavioral health crises of college students on nearby campuses.
As part of this behavioral health care partnership, The Zucker Hillside Hospital addresses successful re-entry into the university setting, transitional post-hospital outpatient treatment, and ongoing therapy in concert with the colleges' student counseling centers.
