Cohen Children’s Medical Center Improves Quality of Care

Cohen Children’s Medical Center adopted the enterprise-wide initiative of earning Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center verification from the American College of Surgeons (ACS). As part of the initiative, they recognized that an institutional cultural change was needed and implemented Kurt Lewin’s Change Model to initiate the change. A change leader was identified and was responsible for moving the group through the various stages of the change process. The initiative also received support from physician leadership across the health system and the medical center, including the hospital medical director, who worked with the trauma program and held division chiefs accountable for compliance with admitting injured patients to surgical services.

This work advanced practice changes that would ultimately lead to success, including interdisciplinary collaboration, which advanced the admission of injured patients to trauma surgical services. During the change process, individual successes and accomplishments were publicly recognized and issues were addressed on an individual basis. Since implementation in 2014, there has been a 21% decrease in hospital length of stay and a 75% reduction in non-surgical service admissions.
