Effective Coordination of Care?The Role of Hospitalist

July 18, 2018

11 a.m.-Noon

Registration is open to HANYS Members and Non-Members.

Hosted by HANYS and Medical Liability Mutual Insurance Company (MLMIC), this 60-minute, complimentary webinar will feature a presentation by John Krisa, MD, Physician Advisor and practicing hospitalist for the Acute Care Troy Division of St. Peter’s Health Partners.

Dr. Krisa will explain how a well-designed and implemented hospitalist system can help all physicians provide optimum care to their patients while reducing their potential liability risk.

DETAILS:

The primary responsibility for patient care in the hospital has traditionally rested with the primary care physician or primary care practice. Over time, various factors have driven that practice model to change. These include an increase in emergency admissions, with a resultant higher patient acuity and reimbursement changes. These changes have led to the evolution of the hospitalist medical specialty and the expansion of the use of hospitalists in healthcare facilities.

Additionally, inadequate handoffs have been implicated as a source of adverse events and near-misses in the hospital setting. Inefficiencies in communication during critical handoffs can, and do, result in poor outcomes and subsequent claims of malpractice.

As a result of attending this presentation, you will be able to:

  • explain the role of the hospitalist in healthcare facilities;
  • outline the pros and cons of hospitalist care;
  • describe the communication responsibilities of the primary care provider and hospitalist;
  • review strategies to promote communication processes between healthcare providers; and
  • discuss ways to improve coordination of care resulting in effective transitions for the patient.
