Building diagnostic excellence: Tools for the journey

Diagnostic harm is an emerging area of concern in healthcare quality and patient safety. This session will provide an overview of MedStar’s Health Institute for Quality and Safety new TeamSTEPPS program for diagnostic improvement. This program aims to raise diagnostic safety awareness; introduce the concept of a broad multidisciplinary diagnostic team that includes nonclinicians and patients and their families; and provide assessment and training tools to support local efforts to reduce diagnostic harm.

By the end of this session, attendees will be able to:

  • articulate how improved communication among care team members can lead to safer, more accurate and more timely diagnosis in all healthcare settings; and
  • access MedStar’s Team STEPPS program for diagnostic improvement.
