Good Samaritan Streamlines Victim Support Services

Communities often struggle to provide assistance to people who suffer from abuse at the hands of others. The Spirit of Rockland Special Victims Center at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center (Bon Secours Charity Health System) in Suffern has placed a network of services under one roof for those who experience: childhood sexual abuse; domestic violence; human and sex trafficking; abuse of immigrants; geriatric abuse; and abuse of those who are physically, psychologically, or intellectually impaired.

The goals of the center are holistic care of all victims; arrest and prosecution of criminal abusers; community education about victimization; and cooperative streamlined services—including counseling, video-taped testimony, support groups, victims assistance programs, referrals, and Lily—a therapy dog.

The center has provided comprehensive care for more than 200 victims, supportive services for at least 400 additional family members, and was crucial in the first successful prosecution of a human trafficking case in New York State.
