Innovation Spotlight: New York Hospitals Are Improving Health, Enhancing Quality, and Reducing Costs.

Kings County Increases Addiction Treatment Retention Rates

Changing the lives of individuals and communities impacted by addiction takes persistence and dedication by both patients and treatment providers. Recognizing that retention in treatment is an essential predictor of success, the Opioid Addiction Treatment Program at Kings County Hospital Center set a goal to improve its retention rate.

The hospital helped resolve barriers to treatment such as housing, transportation, and child care; designated an outreach worker to help re-engage patients in treatment after a missed visit; and began a peer-led orientation on the day of admission.

By implementing these patient-centered interventions, the hospital achieved and maintained a 95% 30-day retention rate, exceeding New York State's target of 90%.
