New York’s Hospitals Address Critical Mental Health Needs

HANYS Highlights Programs for Mental Health Awareness Month

ALBANY, N.Y.—In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, the Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS) is highlighting how hospitals and health systems are providing mental health services in every corner of New York State.

From Bellevue Hospital’s emergency psychiatric care for children, to River Hospital’s PTSD program for soldiers, to a Northwell Health partnership to help local college students, healthcare organizations are addressing the critical behavioral and mental health needs of their communities.

“Every day, healthcare providers see the very real connection between mental and physical health,” said HANYS President Dennis Whalen. “Through innovative programs and community partnerships, hospitals and health systems across the state are delivering critical mental health services to patients in need.”

However, New York’s hospitals and health systems also face significant reimbursement, regulation, and workforce challenges to get mental health services on an equal footing with their physical health services.  Behavioral health services continue to be underfunded by government and commercial payers and communities face critical healthcare workforce shortages, especially in the area of psychiatry.

Regardless of these strains, healthcare providers continue to undertake the challenge of integrating behavioral health and physical health in patient-centered models, such as Health Homes and programs developed under the state’s Delivery System Reform Incentive Payment (DSRIP) initiative.

Throughout Mental Health Awareness Month, HANYS will be sharing brief case studies, member stories, and resources on social media channels, in HANYS News, on our Triple Aim website, and with legislators and healthcare leaders, to highlight the critical mental health and substance use services provided by New York’s hospitals and health systems.
