Bea Grause Installed as President of the Healthcare Association of New York State
ALBANY, N.Y. — M. Beatrice Grause, R.N., J.D., F.A.C.H.E., is leading the Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS) as its new President. The HANYS Board of Trustees chose Ms. Grause for the position in December; she has worked with HANYS’ members and staff over the intervening months, officially beginning her tenure as President on July 1. Ms. Grause succeeds Dennis P. Whalen, who retired after serving HANYS for six years, three as its President.
“Bea is a proven healthcare leader who has the knowledge, experience, and drive to position New York’s healthcare providers to meet the many challenges we face in a rapidly-changing healthcare world,” said HANYS Board Chair Stephens Mundy, President and Chief Executive Officer, The University of Vermont Health Network—Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital.
“With the healthcare delivery system transforming in new ways, we are fortunate to have a leader who has a vision for change that is informed by her strong clinical background and direct patient care experience. We enthusiastically welcome her as our new President and look forward to working with her to advance healthcare throughout the state.”
“Joining HANYS at this important time of healthcare transformation—as our members face tremendous opportunities and challenges—is exciting and inspiring,” said Ms. Grause. “HANYS will continue to be a proactive partner with policy makers and stakeholders to achieve better care for all New Yorkers.”
Before joining HANYS, Ms. Grause served as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Vermont Association of Hospitals and Health Systems for 14 years. In that position, she successfully led Vermont hospitals through a variety of reform initiatives, including the state’s single-payer debate, continuously and intentionally building the hospitals’ brand as trusted, competent leaders.
Ms. Grause also worked for ten years in Washington D.C. in a variety of positions, beginning as a Legislative Assistant for U.S. Representatives Norman Y. Mineta and Joseph P. Kennedy II. She simultaneously held senior governmental affairs positions with the Tennessee Hospital Association and Massachusetts Hospital Association. She spent the last three years working as counsel with the law firm of Foley, Hoag, where she developed tailored legislative and regulatory strategies for healthcare clients.
Before Washington D.C., Ms. Grause spent ten years in California, where she worked as a registered nurse, primarily in the emergency room and intensive care areas at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.
She is active in the American Hospital Association (AHA), having served as an at-large member of the AHA Board of Trustees and chairing its Allied Advisory Committee on Medicaid. She earned her Juris Doctorate from Santa Clara University School of Law, and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Boston College.
