Kemp Hannon receives HANYS’ 2019 Distinguished Service Award

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — The Healthcare Association of New York State presented its 2019 Distinguished Service Award to Sen. Kemp Hannon. The presentation was made at an awards luncheon at HANYS’ 51st Annual Membership Conference on June 20.

Kemp Hannon has been a tireless advocate of improving the delivery of healthcare for all residents in New York. Sen. Hannon chaired the New York State Senate Health Committee for 23 of his 29 years in the Senate and served an additional 13 years as a member of the New York State Assembly.

“It has been an honor to work with Sen. Hannon and benefit from his experience and wisdom. Sen. Hannon was always interested and willing to listen to the concerns of providers and he astutely worked to balance and address diverse perspectives. Importantly, our work with Sen. Hannon was always insightful, honest and put patient care first,” said HANYS President Bea Grause, RN, JD. “Sen. Hannon has made an indelible impact on New York’s healthcare. On behalf of HANYS, I congratulate him on this well-deserved recognition.”

Known for his intellect and ability to grapple with complex issues, Sen. Hannon complemented his ardent constituent advocacy with pivotal state legislation, particularly in the areas of healthcare, good government and business.

Sen. Hannon is regarded as the spearheading force behind many major healthcare initiatives in New York, including the original Health Care Reform Act and its subsequent reauthorizations and the development of New York’s Assisted Living Program. He negotiated numerous healthcare provisions in state budgets and his determination helped to move the state to enact and/or improve popular health programs that provide health coverage for children and adults; coverage for autism, prostate and breast cancer screenings; and drug coverage for seniors. Sen. Hannon has also been a champion of early intervention efforts in healthcare.

During his tenure as chair of the Senate Health Committee, Sen. Hannon provided critical vision and direction on virtually all healthcare legislation before the Senate. Always an advocate to ensure quality and access in all healthcare settings, HANYS worked in partnership with Sen. Hannon to ensure that hospitals and health systems across the state could meet the needs of their patients and diverse communities.

HANYS’ Distinguished Service Award was established by the association’s board of trustees in 1979 to recognize individuals who have demonstrated outstanding personal service in the healthcare field in one or more of the following areas: patient welfare, hospital administration, residential healthcare administration, local and state healthcare organizations, public service and promotion of legislation relating to better healthcare.

The Healthcare Association of New York State is the only statewide hospital and continuing care association in New York, representing nonprofit and public hospitals, nursing homes, home care agencies and other healthcare organizations.
